Microsoft Mocks the Chromebook in Latest Anti-Google 'Scroogled' Ad

Taking a fresh shot at Google, Microsoft has now released an ad that targets the Chromebook, Google's Chrome OS-based cloud-focused notebooks, as a part of its anti-Google 'Scroogled' campaign.

The new Scroogled ad features stars from American reality TV show, Pawn Stars, and features the setting of a pawn shop where people trade things and check their value. The ad features a woman walking into a pawn shop in the hope of trading a Chromebook gifted to her by her mother for a ticket to Hollywood. The dealer confronts her by asking what makes her think that it's worth that much to which she responds that it was a laptop. Following her response, the ad shifts to an aside with the shop dealer breaking into laughter and talking about the Chromebook, calling it a relatively new kind of device that runs just web based applications. "When you're not connected, it's pretty much a brick," he exclaims. He then talks about how a traditional PC utilises built-in applications like 'Office and iTunes' that work even when you're offline.

The scene shifts back to the shop where the dealer tells the woman that the Chromebook logo implies that the device is 'not a real laptop' and that it doesn't have Windows or Office. He goes on, saying that it doesn't do much at all without Wi-Fi, and that when you do get online, "Google tracks what you do so that they can sell ads," bringing the focus back to user privacy, which has been the central point of the Scroogled campaign.

"That's how you get Scroogled," the dealer says, following which another dealer, who's standing next to him asks what the term exactly meant. The first dealer then replies that Google is always trying to find more ways to make money off of people's personal information and that the Chromebook hardware makes it even easier for them. He reiterates in another aside that he can't buy something which is not what it appears to be, and that he doesn't want to get Scroogled.

Microsoft has also put a dedicated web destination on its Scroogled website where it has listed the problems plaguing Chromebook devices.

Chromebooks have been touted as no-frills low cost notebooks that relies on a cloud based set-up for applications and data storage, and is deeply integrated with Google's services. Unlike Windows-based devices, it doesn't come with a large number of native applications, out of the box.

The ad comes days after Microsoft started offering anti-Google merchandise for sale on its online store, saying that the Scroogled gear was a new way for people to express themselves and their misgivings about Google.

Microsoft started the Scroogled campaign in April through which it started attacking Google with a series of ad campaigns. The ads, which have appeared online, on television and in print, depict Google as a duplicitous company more interested in increasing profits and power than protecting people's privacy and providing unbiased search results.

So he’s invented a way of getting great shots every time…using a helmet cam attached to the head of his pet chicken, Lizzy!

And when his homemade ‘Galluscam’ device is worn by the bird it always records stunning images.

In the ad we see Lizzy doing everything from filming on board a motorbike to recording the action at a rock concert and even shooting as it rides the rapids in a canoe!

The chuckle filled spoof was inspired by the latest, real-life technology in the LG G2 smartphone, the ideal partner for your own adventures.

Girl From Pune Wins Google's Doodle Contest

Gayatri Ketharaman, a 15-year-old girl, from Pune won Doodle4Google contest for 2013 with a doodle titled 'Sky's The Limit for Indian Women'. The winning doodle will feature on Google India's homepage on November 14.

Google holds the doodle contest for school kids in India every year on a particular theme and features the winning entry on its homepage on Children's Day. For this year, the theme was 'celebrating the Indian women'. Google India managing director Rajan Anandan said the company received over 1.5 lakh entries this year.

Gayatri, currently a student of class 10 at the Bishop's Co-Ed School in Pune, has been taking part in the contest for last four years. She came close to winning in 2011 when her doodle on 'India's gift to the world' was among the shortlisted entries. But this year she finally succeeded with a doodle that celebrates the Indian woman and her life.

"It took me around a week to complete the doodle once I started working on it. But before that I spend several weeks thinking about the theme and how best I can represent the ideas I had in my mind about Indian women," Gayatri told TOI. "My doodle attempts to show different qualities of Indian women."

The doodle, which has to resemble the word Google, starts with a dancing woman who is arched to represent G. Gayatri says that the figure represents the grace and feminine side of Indian women. In place of two Os, Gayatri has used one rupee coin and a symbol for home, representing how Indian women take care of work as well as home. In place of G, there are earth and moon, showing that the Indian women are go-getters. In place of L, there is a woman holding a kid, showing caring nature of Indian women and in place of E, there is a police cap, which shows that when required Indian women can wear different hats and can be tough and brave.

This year the Doodle4Google contest had three categories. Category one was for students from class 1 to 3, category two was for students from class 4 to 6 and category three was for students from class 7 to 10. The category one was won by Madhuram Vatsal from Lucknow, category two was won by Binita Biswajeeta from Balasore and the category three was won by Akash Shetty from Mangalore. Gayatri was the overall winner.

Google said that before deciding the winners, it had selected 12 finalists. All of them have been given a Chromebook as well as a few other prizes.

"The entries this year have come from across the country which is a clear indication that we are well underway to taking the internet to the next billion," said Anandan.

Google often features doodles on its homepage to mark important moments like holiday or historical event. It also often pays homage to scientists, inventors and other notable persons on its homepage through dedicated doodles.

The owner of the online "Wallet Service" Bitcoin  has claimed that 4,100 Bitcoins(US$1.04m)
were lost in a hacker attack. He said that he's not going to report it to police as these
transactions are virtually impossible to trace. He is attempting to pay back customers who had stored more than 1 BTC (currently worth around $330) from his own personal account, as well as from the coins Inputs.io had in "cold storage" – a wallet not connected to the internet. But that totals slightly more than 1500 BTC, well less than the amount lost.

Microsoft to End security updates for Windows XP

Microsoft is doing its level best to get Windows XP holdouts to upgrade to a newer operating system. No new patches will arrive after April 8, 2014, and now the company is pondering cutting off antivirus updates at that point, too.
That means if you’re using Security Essentials to protect your Windows XP system from malware, you’ll be doubly exposed.

Google has announced that it’ll keep updating Chrome after that, but again, that’s just one app. Windows XP will no longer be secure, and nothing that Google does to Chrome will change that. Other companies that develop antivirus software may continue updating their apps, but that won’t guarantee protection for XP users running unpatched after April 8 either.

Microsoft would rather focus its efforts on Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. It’s been looking after Windows XP since 2001, and it really is time to move on. Mostly, anyway. High-profile Microsoft partners will still be able to get their hands on patches for Windows XP, but it won’t be cheap. The company does provide custom solutions for customers that need fixes for software that’s past its “best before” date.
Theoretically, then, you may be able to get your hands on Windows XP updates after April 8, 2014 but it’s not going to be easy — and Microsoft won’t be making it any easier. In six more months it might finally be time to bite the bullet and purchase a new machine running Windows 8.1 — or at least a used one running Windows 7 which has a few more years of support coming.

According to NetApplications, Windows XP still has a significant desktop market share. In fact, it has more market share than Windows 8. NetApplications reports Windows XP has 31.4 percent share. That compares to 46.4 percent for Windows 7, 8.9 percent for Windows 8 and 4 percent for Windows Vista.

With an estimated 500 million systems in use today running Windows XP, they're soon going to become easing pickings for cybercriminals.

People don't like to hear that. They've invested in Windows XP -- maybe way back in late 2001, when it was first released -- and their consumer laptops continue to run just fine, thanks very much. Many businesses large and small, from neighborhood dental and medical facilities all the way up to Fortune 1000 firms, have invested in software, embedded systems or heavily customized applications that only run on XP or Internet Explorer 6. They don't want to pony up for new hardware, OS licenses and replacement applications. Furthermore today's economic climate stinks and to top it off, for the majority of would-be users, Microsoft has failed to make Windows 8 sexy.

Furthermore, XP continues to be widely used, thus making it an attractive target. As of October 2013, 31% of all PCs still ran Windows XP, putting it in second place behind Windows 7 (46% market share), but ahead of versions of Windows 8 (9%), Mac OS X (8%), Vista (4%) and Linux (2%), according to NetMarketShare.com. By the end of 2013, reckons Gartner, there will be 1.63 billion PCs, which puts the Windows XP install base at about 500 million units.

Microsoft Released its Security Intelligence Report Volume 15

Microsoft Corp. released its Security Intelligence Report volume 15, which analyzes threat intelligence from more than 1 billion systems to provide perspectives on exploits, vulnerabilities and malware to help customers manage risk.

In a release, the Company noted among other intelligence, the report examines the security risk that consumers and businesses face when using unsupported operating systems and software and looks at the implications of using Windows XP once support, including security updates, ends April 8, 2014. New telemetry compares the security of modern operating systems such as Windows 8 with older operating systems such as Windows XP that, according to StatCounter, make up approximately 21 percent of operating systems.

The report found these top three threats for those running Windows XP:

-Sality. Malware family that can steal personal information and lower a PC's security settings.

-Ramnit. Malware that infects Windows executable files, Microsoft Office files and HTML files.

-Vobfus. Family of wormsthat can download other malware onto a PC; it can be downloaded by other malware or spread via removable drives, such as USB flash drives.

The report found that in the first half of 2013, nearly 17 percent of computers running up-to-date, real-time security products from Microsoft encountered malware. Although Windows 8 encountered a similar amount of malware as Windows XP, computers running Windows XP were six times more likely to actually be infected with those threats.

"The data help illustrate the positive impact that security innovations in newer operating systems are having. Modern operating systems such as Windows 8 include advanced security technologies that are specifically designed to make it harder, more complex, more expensive and, therefore, less appealing for cybercriminals to exploit vulnerabilities," said Tim Rains, director of Microsoft Trustworthy Computing.

Rains added that once security updates for Windows XP stop on April 8, 2014, security risks associated with continuing to use the outdated software will increase as cybercriminals seek to exploit newly discovered vulnerabilities. The last version of Windows XP to go out of support was Service Pack 2. In the two years following, malware infections jumped 66 percent when compared with Windows XP SP3, the version for which support ends next year.

"The importance of upgrading from Windows XP cannot be overstated," Rains said. "We truly want people to understand the risks of running Windows XP after support ends and to recognize the security benefits of upgrading to a more modern operating system, one that includes the latest in security innovations, provides ongoing support and can in turn better protect them."

Microsoft releases its Security Intelligence Report twice a year to inform the public about the most prevalent global and regional threats so they can better protect themselves and their organizations. Volume 15 of the report includes new data from the first half of 2013.

Why BackTrack is recommended for Hackers ?

If you're a hacker or a geek who is seeking to do something different, then you might be familiar with the most recommended os BACKTRACK.Penetration (Pen) testing and security auditing are now part of every system administrator's "other duties as assigned." BackTrack Linux (http://www.backtrack-linux.org/) is a custom distribution designed for security testing for all skill levels from novice to expert. It has the largest collection of wireless hacking, server exploiting, web application assessing, social-engineering tools available in a single Linux distribution.BackTrack Linux contains more than 300 security tools and utilities that are all open source. Many security professionals prefer them over expensive commercial programs. And, hackers certainly prefer hundreds of no cost, high-end applications to anything commercial. One reason for BackTrack's popularity is its anonymity. You don't have to register (Registration is optional). No names, bank accounts, or user accounts are associated with obtaining the ISO image. Additionally, no spyware will report back to any vendor.

In short, BackTrack's tagline says it all: "The quieter you become, the more you are able to hear."

The distro is a bootable, live DVD that's approximately 2GB in size. If you decide to install it to a hard disk or USB drive, the installation expands to almost 7GB. BackTrack is perfectly suited to installation to a USB drive, so that it's portable and stealthier than a hard disk install. A 16GB USB drive holds the installation with plenty of room for saving files and data.
Remember that you'll need to save your data from your information gathering exercises so that you can write security audit reports for your clients. The Live DVD is powerful but considerably slower than a hard disk or USB disk. If you use the DVD, use a USB drive or mountable hard disk partition to save the information you gather.

What's Included in the Distro

The BackTrack Distribution includes the following major tool categories:

Information Gathering
Vulnerability Assessment
Exploitation Tools
Privilege Escalation
Maintaining Access
Reverse Engineering
RFID Tools
Stress Testing
Forensics
Reporting Tools
Services
Miscellaneous

What Happens if u Run 2 Antivirus in Your System ?

Many of you might have a question about having 2 antivirus running in a system. Many might think this will increase your system's security when you install 2 antivirus back to back into your system. The basic function of an antivirus is to block external agents running on your pc.If both the av have monitoring enabled, they fight over resources causing a loss of performance of your system. Also in rare cases it can cause crashes if the real time monitoring is going for the same resource at the same time. Also antivirus software generally runs at the hightly trusted kernel level of the operating system, creating a potential risk for the system. But 2 Security tools have to be enabled in your system,Antivirus and a firewall.Next time don't try to install 2 antivirus in your system.Select a better antivirus from the list.

Samsung Galaxy S3 Android 4.3 firmware leaked – build I9300XXUGMJ9

Following the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy Note 2, Android 4.3 firmware for the Samsung Galaxy S3 has also made its way online and is available for download, unofficially of course.

This is the first Android 4.3 leak for the Galaxy S3, build version I9300XXUGMJ9, and while stable, is still a test build and will probably have a few bugs. According to SamMobile, some of the changes include a complete overhaul of the UI, making it similar to what can be seen on the Samsung Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3, with the Settings app also featuring a new tabbed interface. Unfortunately, the original launcher and widgets are still being used, and Samsung Knox, which is an expected feature with the final release, is yet to be implemented in this version. Of course, since this is a test build, features and more UI changes may be available in future leaks and the final, official release.

Sprint's 'Spark' technology enables cellular data speeds of up to 60Mbps

Sprint claims it has developed a new wireless technology that could allow the carrier to surpass the wireless data speeds of its rivals. Dubbed Sprint Spark, the "super-high-

speed" currently reaches peak rates of 50 to 60Mbps, but Sprint insists that number will grow as the technology matures. In fact, to illustrate the progress it's making on that

front, Sprint today demonstrated 1Gbps over-the-air speeds at one of its labs.

Unfortunately existing smartphones won't be able to take advantage of Sprint Spark; you'll need tri-band hardware, designed to utilize all of Sprint's spectrum bands on one

device, to achieve the higher speeds. The first of those — from HTC, LG and Samsung — are due to arrive starting in November. Sprint claims these devices will be able to

seamlessly hand off between 800MHz, 1.9GHz and 2.5GH frequencies, providing a continuous high-speed data session without interruptions or slowdowns.
